Historical Context
The Coney Island and Gravesend Railway Company was incorporated on March 22, 1893, under and in pursuance of the Railroad Law of the State of New York, for the purpose of constructing, maintaining and operating street-surface railroads in the Borough of Brooklyn.
All of the company's lines were powered either by horse or electricity.
During the period between June 30, 1898, and April 1, 1899, all of the railroads and railroad property of the company were leased to the Nassau Electric Railroad Company. On the latter date, the lease was transferred to the Brooklyn Heights Railroad Company.
One of the company's lines ran from West 37th Street to Sheepshead Bay via Surf and Neptune Avenues.
