Historical Context
Mining activities in the Cananea area can be traced back to the early Jesuit Fathers and Spanish activities in the 18th century. American activities at Cananea started in 1896 with the formation of the Cananea Copper Company with William C. Greene and three other individuals.
By 1899 Greene gained controlling interest of the mine and in 1901 a reorganization was made and the mine became the Cananea Consolidated Copper Company.
In 1906 the Greene Cananea Copper Company was incorporated with control over the Greene Consolidated Copper Company and the Cananea Central Copper Company.
