Historical Context
The Susquehanna and Clearfield Railroad was incorporated in Pennsylvania on December 7, 1879. The company, was reorganized in 1883 as a branch of the Philadelphia and Erie Railroad and ran from Keating to Karthaus, Pennsylvania - a distance of about 22 miles.
On March 26, 1901, the Susquehanna and Clearfield Railroad Company, the West Branch Valley Railroad Company (a line extending in a northeasterly direction from Clearfield, Pennsylvania, to follow the easy grades of the West Branch of the Susquehanna River), and the Canoe Creek Railroad Company, were merged into the Beech Creek Extension Railroad Company and the property of the latter was formally leased by the New York Central and Hudson River Railroad Company on May 11, 1901.
