The Mercantile Library Company of Philadelphia was established in 1821, it was the third mercantile library established in the country.
The Mercantile Library Company of Philadelphia started out as a subscription library but began issuing stock in 1826.
In 1989, the Free Library of Philadelphia absorbed the collections of the Mercantile Library.
One of the library's staff members was John Edmands. Edmands was responsible for innovations in filing methodologies and inspired Poole's guide to periodical literature.
