Historical Context
This company's roots trace back to the Louisville City Rail Way Company, which was founded as a horse car operation in Louisville in 1859. It absorbed rival companies as the industry developed, and was renamed the Louisville Railway Company in 1880. The tracks were all 5 feet gauge.
In 1889, the company introduced the city's first electric streetcar line on Green Street - now Liberty Street.
Two years later, electrification of streetcar lines completed, with the Crescent Hill Mule Car Line being the system's last to rely on horse power.
