Historical Context
The Duplex Coupler Company was incorporated in Montana and was based in Whitefish.
The company patented an automatic train line coupler which coupled the air signal, air brake and the steam heat line. It also served as an electrical communication from one end of the train to the other, all of which was in one coupler and which automatically coupled the air and communication lines as the cars came together. It made it unnecessary for a brakeman to go between the cars at any time.
It appears the company never gained any traction as there is no evidence they ever reached the production stage.
