Historical Context
The Canon City-Florence and Royal Gorge Interurban Railway Company Stock Certificate was incorporated in Denver, Colorado in March of 1906.
The March 14, 1906 edition of the Lamar Register described the project as follows:
"The building of an electric line from this city to Florence, South Canon, Fast Canon, Lincoln park and the top of the Royal Gorge is now absolutely assured.
Orders have been placed for the material for the road, surveys have been made, construction of the roadbed will begin Immediately, rails will be laid in April and the whole system will be in operation by July Ist, according to the statement of General Manager Granger. The Royal Gorge branch will be one of the greatest scenic lines in the world, rivaling, if not surpassing, the famous cog line to the top of Pike’s Peak.
The road will be built across a great crevice in the east wall of the gorge, opposite and directly above the hanging bridge of the Arkansas. At this point the cars will be suspended 2.300 feet above the river, commanding a line view of the gorge, the bridge, the railroad and the river below. It will be the highest bridge in the world.
From this point the Arkansas river looks like a tiny silver thread and a train of cars on the track below running at full speed like a serpent crawling along the valley. The establishment of this scenic road will make Canon City a great resort center."
In 1907, the Canon City & Royal Gorge Railroad Company was formed to take over the original entity's assets. 10 miles of line was built to the gorge, but the Arkansas River was never crossed.
