Historical Context
The Ensley Southern Railway Company was incorporated on February 23, 1900, under the general railroad laws of Alabama, for the purpose of constructing and operating a railroad either extending from Ensley or Bessemer or from any point between those towns to a point at or near Parrish. The road was important to the development of the area's coal operations.
Eventually, the owned mileage of the Ensley Southern reached 29 miles. The company operated three branches as follows:
- Ensley to Little Warrior River (19 miles)
- Little Warrior River to Maxine (4 miles)
- Parrish to the Sloss Company's mine (6 miles)
The line became part of the Southern Railway Company system in 1926.
