The Allegheny & Western was a Pennsylvania-based railroad company. The line was incorporated on January 22, 1898, through the filing with the secretary of state of Pennsylvania of an agreement dated December 29, 1897, providing for the consolidation of the Allegheny and Western Railway Company and the Jefferson and Allegheny Railway Company. The line was immediately leased by the Buffalo, Rochester and Pittsburgh Railway Company.
The company operated just over 71 miles of track as follows:
- Allegheny & Western Junction to Butler Junction - 59.020 miles
- Butler Junction to Butler Transfe - 0.699 miles
- New Castle to Lehigh Portland Cement Plant and spurs - 8.759 miles
- Craigsville to Limestone Tipple - 2.872 miles
