Historical Context
The American Niagara Railroad Corporation was incorporated in New York on December 30, 1920 - financed by the New York Central Railroad and the Canadian Pacific Railway. The company's 11 mile line was to run from a connection with the New York Central at or near its junction with the Lehigh Valley Railroad near Tonawanda, to a connection with the bridge and railroad of the Canadian Niagara River Bridge Company - which was also a New York Central and Canadian Pacific entity - crossing the easterly or Tonawanda Branch of the Niagara River on a bridge that extended entirely across Grand Island to the Canadian border. Neither company was able to accomplish their respective plans, and no such bridge was built until the New York legislature stepped in sold bonds to fund the state back project. |
