Historical Context
The Maxim Munitions Corporation was originally a manufacturer of munitions, but later engaged in domestic and foreign sale of power trucks, farm tractors, gas engines and automobile vehicle construction units. The tractor was built to what was referred to by tractor engineers as automobile design, and it was driven by a worm shaft and worm wheel through a sliding gear selective type transmission gear set having three forward speed ratios and reverse. The power was stated to be sufficient to draw three 14-inch bottom plows.
The company also marketed Dart trucks under the name of Maxim-Dart for export trade.
Maxim Munitions was originally formed with the intention of making a new machine gun designed by Hudson Maxim at a plant in New Haven, Connecticut and ammunition at a building purchased from the Secor Typewriter Company in Derby, Connecticut. A prototype of Hudson Maxim's machine gun (called the Brown Air Cooled Shoulder Machine Rifle) was said to have been tested by the US military and offered to the Russian's but little seems to have come of it.
After some members of the company falsely claimed to have bought a patent for a gasoline substitute powder that could be mixed with water to make fuel (known as the Enricht Method,) an embarrassed Hudson Maxim resigned as president in 1916.
By the summer of 1917, Maxim Munitions was said to have contracts for 260 million cartridges for Italy and 11 million for the US. But they seem to have had trouble filling these contracts and arranged to have them taken over by the United States Cartridge Company using Maxim Munitions tooling from the Derby plant.
The company also had a plant in Watertown, New York.
