Historical Context
The Christie Engine Company was incorporated in Arizona in 1905 and was based in Waterloo, Iowa.
The company was formed for the purpose of exploiting the Christie fourstroke cycle air-steam engine, which was the invention of E. J. Christie. The engine was claimed to be rated at 300 horsepower and was constructed by the Vilter Manufacturing Company, of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. It was claimed that "the chief merit of the Christie system of motive power is that it. has the benefits of the condensing engine without the use of the condenser or of water for condensing purposes," and "that the engine has the benefits of initially superheated steam without the use of the superheater."
The company received some rather negative press in a 1911 edition of Power and the Engineer - which debunked the claimed physics of the engine in great detail. It appears the company never recovered, as there is no reference to the company after 1912.
